there is a couple hand held scanners at maybe if nothing else it will give you an idea whats out there.
Radio Shack sells hand-held scanners that will receive almost all frequencies. Or just google hand-held scanner. Many police channels are digital now, so you would have to see if there are digital capable hand-held scanners. I don’t think it would be a good idea to get a radio that you could transmit on. You would need written permission to transmit on another agencies frequency. Without this, you could face legal action.
If the frequency can be received and decrypted if need be, it is fair game. swat channels are nothing big really. Radio Shack has alot of that stuff for you. and they will even have a list of freqencies, or if not that, a book called police call. which lists thousands of freqs for your state.
It is illegal however to use a scanner in commision of a crime (in most states)
And stay with scanners, dont get a transmitting radio because that can cause alot of legal grief if you are tempted to use jump in on conversations on channels you are not authorized on.
